The women who feed Dar es Salaam before sunrise
What thirteen street kitchens taught us about patience, numbers and pride while filming Mama Ntilie.

The first pot goes on the fire at four in the morning. By six, the bus drivers are already eating. By the time the city wakes up, a mama ntilie has done half a day of work.
Listening before filming
We spent a week at each kitchen without a camera. We carried water, peeled cassava and learned who the regulars were. Only then did we ask to film.
Nobody opens up to a crew that arrived an hour ago.
What stayed with us
Every cook we met keeps her accounts in her head, and none of them was ever wrong. That precision became the spine of the series.
